Let’s face it: It never should have lasted. We decided to get married after a week; we got officially engaged after a month; and we were married just six weeks later.Who knows what we were thinking.
After 40 years, I still can't figure it out. Maybe that's the secret.

I like your reasoning AND whatever was working back then is still working now. The adage "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" is definitely a reasonable approach.
